Experimental study of forces between quasi - two - dimensional emulsion droplets near jamming

چکیده
We experimentally study the jamming of quasi-two-dimensional emulsions. Our experiments consist of oilin-water emulsion droplets confined between two parallel plates. From the droplet outlines, we can determine the forces between every droplet over a wide range of area fractions f. We study three bidisperse samples that jam at area fractions fc z 0.86. Our data show that for f > fc, the contact numbers and pressure have power-law dependence on f fc in agreement with the critical scaling found in numerical simulations. Furthermore, we see a link between the interparticle force law and the exponent for the pressure scaling, supporting prior computational observations. We also observe linearlike force chains (chains of large inter-droplet forces) that extend over 10 particle lengths, and examine the origin of their linearity. We find that the relative orientation of large force segments are random and that the tendency for force chains to be linear is not due to correlations in the direction of neighboring large forces, but instead occurs because the directions are biased towards being linear to balance the forces on each droplet.

Experimental observation of local rearrangements in dense quasi-two-dimensional emulsion flow.
We experimentally study rearranging regions in slow athermal flow by observing the flow of a concentrated oil-in-water emulsion in a thin chamber with a constricting hopper shape. The gap of the chamber is smaller than the droplet diameters, so that the droplets are compressed into quasi-two-dimensional pancakes. We focus on localized rearrangements known as "T1 events" where four droplets exch...
متن کاملTopological rearrangements and stress fluctuations in quasi-two-dimensional hopper flow of emulsions
We experimentally study the shear flow of oil-in-water emulsion droplets in a thin sample chamber with a hopper shape. In this thin chamber, the droplets are quasi-2D in shape. The sample is at an area fraction above jamming and forced to flow with a constant flux rate. Stresses applied to a droplet from its neighbors deform the droplet outline, and this deformation is quantified to provide an ...

We investigate the jamming transition in packings of emulsions and granular materials via molecular dynamics simulations. The emulsion model is composed of frictionless droplets interacting via nonlinear normal forces obtained using experimental data acquired by confocal microscopy of compressed emulsions systems. Granular materials are modeled by Hertz-Mindlin deformable spherical grains with ...
متن کاملElongation of confined ferrofluid droplets under applied fields.
Ferrofluids are strongly paramagnetic liquids. We study the behavior of ferrofluid droplets confined between two parallel plates with a weak applied field parallel to the plates. The droplets elongate under the applied field to reduce their demagnetizing energy and reach an equilibrium shape where the magnetic forces balance against the surface tension. This elongation varies logarithmically wi...
متن کاملAngoricity and compactivity describe the jamming transition in soft particulate matter
The application of concepts from equilibrium statistical mechanics to out-ofequilibrium systems has a long history of describing diverse systems ranging from glasses to granular materials. For dissipative jammed systems —particulate grains or droplets— a key concept is to replace the energy ensemble describing conservative systems by the volume-stress ensemble. Here, we test the applicability o...
